    DAY 1: April 19, 2024
Play Therapy Through a Neurosequential Lens

Workshop Description: The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics was developed by Bruce Perry and the Neurosequential Network in order to provide a neurobiologically and developmentally informed approach to conceptualization and treatment planning to enhance our work as clinicians with
traumatized children and adolescents. Although originally conceptualized to help this population, it works well with children across the diagnostic spectrum. The model recognizes that trauma and other developmental experiences are fundamentally dysregulating and disorganizing to the developing brain. As a result, matching interventions to brain disorganization and dysregulation has had a profound impact on treatment outcomes. Play therapy approaches that involve sensory-based play experiences, including models such as Theraplay, art, movement, and engaging the senses are well suited to making a profound impact on improving regulation, connection, and overall well-being. Through these highly relational experiences, children experience co-regulation with clinicians and their caregivers in a way that promotes wellness and improves their quality of life. Participants will be exposed to facets of the model with an emphasis on play therapy to promote effective healing in treatment.

    Theoretical Basis: Developmental & Attachment

    Learning Objectives:
    1. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe the sequence of engagement described by Dr. Bruce Perry and the relationship this has to play therapy treatment planning.
    2. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe how the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics supports play therapy treatment.
    3. In this workshop, participants will be able to identify at least 2 specific play therapy techniques for each dysregulated region of the brain described.
    4. In this workshop, participants will be able to experience how playful multisensory play activities promote self-regulation.
    5. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe how co-regulation facilitates the development of self-regulation.
    6. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe the basic regions of the brain and how their functions manifest in symptoms and behavior in children in play therapy treatment.

    DAY 2: April 20, 2024
    Sensory Processing in Play Therapy

Workshop Description: In this experiential workshop participants will be exposed to play therapy interventions designed to teach them about their own sensory profile and that of children in play therapy while learning how to use sensory experiences to facilitate co-regulation. Eight sensory systems and some common profiles will be reviewed and discussed utilizing a neurodiversity-affirming approach. Through co-regulation children learn to know what it feels like to experience self-regulation. Sensory-based play experiences facilitate the processing of sensory stimuli and their relationship to feelings of wellness. However, these experiences can be elusive in play therapy as the sensory profiles of play therapists and the children they serve are not always complimentary. Those challenges in the playroom reflect the challenges that children often experience in their lives outside of that safe and protected space. Sensory experiences in play therapy can be utilized to enhance co-regulation- the foundation for self-regulation, and felt feelings of safety.

    Theoretical Basis: Developmental & Attachment

    Learning Objectives:

    1. In this workshop, participants will be able to experience how playful multisensory play activities promote self-regulation.
    2. In this workshop, participants will be able to identify the 8sensory systems for use in their play therapy practice.
    3. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe interception for use in their play therapy practice.
    4. In this workshop, participants will be able to identify and describe at least 5 sensory-based play therapy interventions. 5. In this workshop, participants will be able to experience how playful multi-sensory play activities promote self-regulation. 6. In this workshop, participants will be able to describe how co-regulation facilitates the development of self-regulation.
